The Bug
He/Him - Asexual
Nate is a bug boy, first and foremost. His primary features are his use of insects, his social anxiety, and his pacifism. Nate was made to be scary by design, but ultimately harmless to the average person.
Also note that bug is used in the broader sense, as his control does include things slightly outside of the frame of what are considered to be insects (i.e. Spiders).
Height: 5'6" Age ~17, visually
Eyes: Pink irises, and pupils.
Nate's eyes are usually covered by goggles that look like Compound Eyes. This is to help dull down his sight to keep himself from becoming overstimulated. He nearly never removes these goggles at all.
Nate's "hair" is actually extra large moth antennae. The bits at the front that peek out are to catch scents and the like. Taking off his hood allows him to sense even more.

Nate's hoodie can harden to be like the shell of a beatle. Many a bug are tucked between the folds of his silk scarf. Nate actually has a whole colony of fire ants in his backpack that tend to have free roam beneath his hoodie. Occasionally they come up to be seen of their own accord, and sometimes, Nate summons them forward to help with certain tasks. Mostly, they just make him feel better though.

Nate almost always wears his green backpack. This is where he keeps most of his insect colonies that he maintains, as well as various other items and seeds. Gloria has her own compartment to keep her safe and secure when she does travel with Nate, which she does more frequently in her youth. Nate is often extremely protective of his backpack. The insects within have been linked with him for so long that they sometimes act on his thoughts without him needing to directly command them.
Nate's pants are either a solid orange, or, yellow with the pattern referencing the Giant Centipede running down the outside of his legs.
Generally, things that are blue or green, and buggy in nature tends to be within his style.
Personality
Slug Feet
Nate is mostly harmless and does his best to be helpful.
Not-Normals - Nate's old friend taught him that he should help other Not-Normals. So, when Nate comes across any solo monsters/pastas, he does what he can to help them. Nate echoes the mantra of "Not-Normals should help Not-Normals".
Groups - Nate has social anxiety. One on one conversations with total strangers is fine for Nate. It's when there are two or more others in a group that makes Nate start to hesitate and fidget. He generally becomes less verbal, and often tries to make himself smaller or hide behind things.
Xenlusan - Nate is generally Xen's keeper/caretaker. Despite his softspoken nature, he does fairly well at keeping Xen in line with their generalized mutual trust. When Xen is in a group, Nate clings to him or hides behind him. Xen definitely helps Nate's confidence just by hanging out.
Solo - Nate is kind and curious. When left to his own devices, he does testing and research with his insect abilities. He cares for the bugs he summons, and seems to genuinely care about them as much as he can. In AUs where Nate doesn't cross paths with Xen often has webs of social networks and odd potions that he's developed. Nate really likes to tinker, and is often a friend of other science minded characters in the shared curiosity of their world.
Normals - Nate generally keeps a distance from humans when he can. He sees himself as less than humans. Despite also being aware of the evils they're capable of, Nate also has a background envy of them. He was in the process of becoming Human when he and Natasha were separated. Humans remind him that it's his inhumanity that had driven Natasha's father to split them up. Deep down, he has the false idea that, if he were human, everything would be better somehow.
Abilities
Shapeshifting
This ability is limited to insect forms. Nate can shift his body to mimic that of various insects. This ability has not been fully tested to find its true limits. Nate's most common use of this is a shell, and wings.
Absorb Healing
When Nate's exterior has been damaged enough to cause an open wound, Nate can take other bugs and absorb them, to close the wound and heal himself. The effectiveness of this varies from bug to bug. (An ironclad beetle is more effective than a fruit fly.) Nate tries not to use this because he then feels the insect lose itself into his own form. However, self preservation trumps a few nightmares for the future.
Heightened senses
Nate's sense of smell and change of air pressure is extremely sensitive. Gnat is often overwhelmed by this, so he finds a way to block a majorty of such senses off with his hoodie.
Tough Stomach
Gnat can eat rotten things and raw things that would make a normal person sick. This does nothing to him. However, some poisons still affect him.
Bug Summoning

Nate has two holes in his arms from which he can summon/create any bug on Earth. While there doesn't seem to be a limit on what kind of bug is summoned, this does seem to drain Gnat's energy quickly. As a result, he doesn't use it very often, without proper precautions. This energy is taken from Nate is more based on size of the summon rather than amount. (Half an average ant colony is about equal to a full sized tarantula.)
Limited Telepathy
Gnat can telepathically connect with any insect he desires. His range is quite extensive. However, in order to do this, Nate's consciousness leavese his body. In addition, if the linked insect is harmed, Nate feels its pain. As Nate grows and excerises this ability, his strength and range of control goes with him.
Accelerated Rot
Nate has the ability to speed up the decomposition of a corpse. He usually does this unintentionally, as it is usually a side effect of eating at a corpse. He hasn't learned to completely control it, but he's aware that he can do so by eating the corpse.
Bestowed Awareness
If Nate links up with an insect for an extended period of time, the insect begins to gain an extended lifespan and more human-like awareness. This has happened to at least three insects, so it's not a one-off thing. Nate just doesn't have enough data to pinpoint the specific variable that causes this.
Backstory
Egg and Hatching
Nate is part of an alien species of Locust-Like creatures. They scatter their eggs, and whatever can survive to return to the hive sends a signal to the colony that their hatching grounds have resources to be consumed. Nate hatched near the yard of Natasha, and was found eating the corpse of her recently deceased dog. Natasha was more curious than scared. She ended up feeding and caring for the odd little bug.
Natasha
The first several years of Nate's larval state were spent with Natasha. She cared for him and fed him like a pet. As she grew, she also practiced her magic. Little by little, she gave Nate more and more human-like traits. She's the one to teach him most of what he knows. They played together and bonded quite a bit, until, Natasha's dad found him. After threatening to shoot Nate at point blank with a shot gun, Natasha's dad uprooted Natasha, and moved far away. By the time Nate got the courage to go back to the house, he lost touch with Natasha.
Free Roam
Nate eventually collects his courage to go out and search for Natasha himself. He keeps hidden as much as he can, but helps where he thinks he should. This is when he comes across Xen and other monsters, making even more friends. After a while, the search for Natasha gets put on the backburner. He doesn't give up on her fully, but, it seems like people like Xen need his attention more immediately. He trusts that Natasha can keep herself safe; he just wants to see his friend again, and, maybe, have the humanization process be completed.
Uses
Cameos and Minor Roles
If you're making a horror/creepypasta project and would like some background characters, you're more than welcome to add in Nate, so long as he's pair up with his buddy Xen. Nate tends to be Xen's keeper. On his own, he tends to be a scout, using his insects to collect information.
Relationships
Super Close Characters
Xenlusan - Xen is Nate's closest and most trusted friend. The pair of them met in the woods, after Nate starts looking for Natasha. Each of them were looking for something, and simply promised each other to help find them. Xen is looking for his memories, while Nate's seeking Natasha. Xen and Nate are nearly inseperable at this point, encountering each other across so many iterations that Nate isn't aware of. Nate is typically seen as Xen's caretaker/handler, while Xen is Nate's protector. They pull off the Smart Guy Big Guy duo dynamic.
Natasha - Natasha was Nate's previous best friend. She's his entire reason for living as an actual person instead of a drone that would have cause the end of the world. It's been years since he's last seen her, and he's getting worried. He's stopped aging...
Gloria - Gloria is a Goliath Spider that Nate summoned as an egg/hatchling. He raised her, more or less to be his companion. After many a year at his side, she had begun to gain a level of intelligence that makes her near-human. She can even reach out to Nate's hivemind of her own accord later in her life. Gloria is a delight.
"Canon" Creepypastas and such
The Twins - Nate respects Masky and Hoodie, in that, he understands that they are of a higher rank than most other proxies. He follows their orders as much as he can, within his own bounds of comfort. He does his best to keep his physical distance, as Hoodie seems to have a slight aversion to the insects Nate has, and Masky gets violent quite easily.
Eyeless Jack - Nate and Jack tend to bond over the scientific method. When the pair don't have their outside jobs to do, they run tests together. Nate develops various chemicals for Jack to use, and Jack helps Nate double check any of his findings. Often, when Gloria isn't with Nate directly, she's in the infirmary with Jack.
Pyros - Nate outright avoids any proxies that use or have an affinity for fire.
The Static Man - The Static Man continues to exist. There is a mutual understanding that Nate will yield to The Slenderman, and The Entity will not probe into Nate's mind. There is a shared concern that mental interference will trigger Nate's connection to his Queen, and cause the nest to come to Earth to devour all.
HABIT - Nate's uneasy around The HABIT and does what he can to avoid it.
Other OCs
Tyler - Tyler is one of the insects that has developed his own sense of sentience after being connected with Nate for so long. He's a vulture bee.
Lunch - Lunch is the last of the three known insects to have gained sentience after a prolonged connection with Nate. Lunch is mostly seen in designs of Nate projected into the future, as well as his primary companion for Nate's Steam Punk designs.
Nasuln - Nate doesn't fully trust Nasuln, but he tolerates her. They both just want to help Xen, right? Though, Nate does allow himself to befriend the victims of Nasuln, such as 3-1 and 29.
4th Category
Nex - Nex is a friend's OC that has memories across different iterations. He and Xen have a closer connection and trust due to this shared trait. Nate isn't sure what he thinks of Nex's odd link with Xen, but, if Xen trusts him, then Nate will too.
Nate is also extra friendly towards Bug/Insect based OCs, and those who express a kindness towards the insects they come across.
